Families often tell us they want to see the best bits of Scotland without everyone ending up knackered. This five-day route shows how we usually put that together. It keeps three comfortable bases, uses private transport throughout, and leaves breathing space so the kids stay happy, and you get to enjoy the views together. We have run versions like this for lots of clients with children of different ages. It works because the pace feels natural rather than forced.
You get Edinburgh’s history, the drama of the Highlands, and a quiet finish along the Fife coast. Everything is booked in advance. Your driver and guide know the family rhythm. If the weather turns or someone needs an extra hour at the hotel, we simply adjust.
🗓️ Day 1: Gentle arrival in Edinburgh
Stay at The Balmoral Hotel
Your private chauffeur meets you at the airport and brings you straight to the hotel. We often arrange early check-in so you can drop your bags, freshen up, and start the day off right instead of waiting around.
Lunch on the Royal Mile at a place like Angels with Bagpipes gives everyone a relaxed introduction to Scottish flavours. Afterwards, you wander past St Giles’ Cathedral and the little hidden closes. Head up to Calton Hill for the views, then enjoy afternoon tea at the elegant Colonnades in the Signet Library – one of those proper Edinburgh experiences that feels special for all ages.
Back at the hotel for a rest, then dinner at the Balmoral’s acclaimed fine-dining restaurant Number One. A private family-friendly ghost tour in the evening works surprisingly well; the stories are engaging without being too scary.
🗓️ Day 2: More of Edinburgh, still at your own speed
Stay again at The Balmoral.
Breakfast at the hotel, then a private tour of Edinburgh Castle. Later, the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Lunch with good city views, followed by Dynamic Earth (the children usually love the interactive bits) or a walk towards Arthur’s Seat if everyone has energy left.
This day stays within the city, so there is no long drive. You return to the hotel by late afternoon, plenty of time to unwind. Dinner at the relaxed Brasserie Prince downstairs is always popular with families.
🗓️ Day 3: Into the Highlands and Loch Ness
Stay at Ness Walk Hotel in Inverness.
An early but comfortable departure with your chauffeur takes you north through the Cairngorms. The scenery changes gradually, and the kids often spot deer or just watch the hills roll by. Coffee stop in Pitlochry gives everyone a leg stretch, perhaps a quick browse at House of Bruar if you fancy.
Lunch near Fort Augustus, then Urquhart Castle with its Loch Ness views. A private boat cruise afterwards lets you take it all in properly rather than rushing. Check into Ness Walk by late afternoon – the riverside setting is lovely. Dinner at Torrish restaurant, right there in the hotel, with views over the water.
🗓️ Day 4: South to St Andrews and the home of golf
Stay at the Old Course Hotel.
A pleasant drive south with a stop around mid-morning. You reach St Andrews by early afternoon, plenty of time to explore the cathedral ruins, the castle, and the famous Old Course. Standing on the Swilcan Bridge with the sea behind is one of those simple moments families remember.
Check into the Old Course Hotel with its superb location and facilities. Dinner at Road Hole restaurant gives you that iconic outlook over the 17th hole – a proper treat at the end of the day.
🗓️ Day 5: Peaceful Fife villages and a smooth finish
Breakfast at the hotel, then a gentle morning through the East Neuk of Fife. The fishing villages – Crail, Pittenweem, Anstruther – offer a quieter, more local side of Scotland that many clients say is their favourite part. Harbour walks, ice cream, and a sense of everyday life rather than tourist crowds.
Lunch at an excellent harbourside restaurant in Anstruther, specialising in fresh seafood. A relaxed drive back to Edinburgh leaves time for a final wander in Princes Street Gardens or quick shopping before your private airport transfer.
This is one way we shape five full days. We have done it with toddlers who needed extra stops, teenagers who wanted more castle history, and multi-generational groups who simply wanted good food and no hassle. We can swap hotels, add private access where it makes sense, or adjust the balance entirely.
If this sounds like the sort of trip your family would enjoy, tell us the ages of the children, your travel dates, and anything you are hoping for – golf for one parent, wildlife spotting for the kids, or just extra time to relax. We will build it properly, attend to every detail, and ensure it feels effortless from the moment you land.
Drop us a message or give the team a call. We will send some tailored options and availability straight away.
